Cyber Monday Interesting Facts

With Cyber Monday looming, I thought I would share some eye-popping facts about this day that ALL marketers need to know and scroll down for the details of our own juicy Black Friday and Cyber Monday collections.

This has been specially designed for webmasters and digital marketing professionals.

Fact #1:

Invented by Marketers:

Make no mistake, it was invented by the National Retail Federation's online Shop.org. Created to have an official day that shoppers go online and encourage them to buy.

Fact #2:

Biggest Shopping Day of the Year:

When it was first invented in 2005, it was only the 12th biggest shopping day.  Last year, it officially became the biggest shopping day of the year with 2.68 billion (with a B) in sales.

Fact #3:

Its Only Getting Bigger:

It has gotten bigger year after year. It has to do with a combination of more businesses going online, invest more marketing dollars on the web, customers wanting to avoid long lines at retailers, similar discounts as Black Friday, consumers more comfortable with shopping online, etc…

Fact #4:

More is spent on Cyber Monday

For all the hype that Black Friday gets its fascinating to know that people spend more on average on Cyber Monday. In fact ($468 vs $309).

Fact #5:

Amazon is the Cyber Monday Giant

Amazon.com has captured almost 40% of the online spending during Cyber Monday.  With Wal-Mart and Target in a distant 2nd and 3rd.

So, with all of this said…

What does this mean for marketers?

Similar to the saying “go where the traffic is” same rules apply with “go where and when the money is being spent”.

Consumers are trained that Cyber Monday is a day of finding discounts so at the very least if you are not offering a discount or coupon you should “sweeten the deal”. If you don't a potential client of yours could buy your competitor's “seemingly” better offer.

Kinsta website hosting is a good example of this as they have this huge aversion to ever discounting their service so they just offer more resources on their servers (however this year they might not even be doing that) but they do offer incentives for buying an annual plan over a monthly plan. This is made clear in their “un-Black Friday promotional” pages.

It's not ideal but a good case study if you really don't want to discount at this time.

Elementor and Elegant Themes also comes to mind for a totally different reason to Kinsta. They do offer discounts BUT they go way overboard in terms of giving out prizes – especially Elegant Themes. If my memory recalls last year Divi gave away about a million dollars of extra products, plugins and prizes so definitely check out what they are up to this year – Elegant Themes Black Friday Discount

I do a good part of my holiday shopping at this time of year and usually, upgrade/renew my most trusted WordPress plugin license keys too.

So take advantage both as a marketer and buyer.

Leverage the psychology that your customers are in the “buying mode” and get a sweet deal yourself too – definitely something to be thankful for!
