This GreenGeeks review will discuss what to expect when signing up with this eco-friendly host.

Because let's face it as great saving trees is if we don't have a website that performs we are losing money by not hosting somewhere else. They might not support the environment but at least you could donate more to green causes, anyway! And if you are looking to get the best deal on GreenGeeks, I will let you know on what to expect in the way of GreenGeeks coupon codes.

How green is GreenGeeks?

This is an important question you need answered to make sure this is not just a marketing gimmick.

On their homepage you will find this statement:

Since our launch in 2008, GreenGeeks has been the industry's leading eco-friendly web hosting provider putting back 3 times the power we consume into the grid in the form of renewable energy. We are based out of Los Angeles, California with a global workforce that provides a better web hosting experience to customers from over 150 countries.

Now I have searched their website to find verifiable proof of this and the only thing I can see is their awards page where they have received several awards in relation to being green, which is a great start.

They also have this rather official looking accreditation badge from the EPA:

So it seems good and credible but I would like to see the official documentation and readings to 100% verify this for you. The GreenGeeks team will read this review so I will update you once I hear from them.

What is GreenGeeks?

Ok so now let's talk about what you get. GreenGeeks is a website hosting provider which means they host your website files for you that allows your audience to view them around the globe.

Specifically, Green Geeks offer these services:

  • WordPress Hosting
  • Drupal Hosting
  • Joomla Hosting
  • cPanel Hosting
  • CMS Hosting (Content Management system Hosting)

So the first thing to notice is that they are specialists in Linux/Apache/MySQL and PHP hosting which all those options above are based on.

There is nothing wrong with that because 90% of the web is based on this but if you want Microsoft based servers, they don't seem to have you covered.

Their basic package includes shared hosting (which is fine if you have a new website) but as your website grows, they have VPS and dedicated servers which cost more but represent a big jump in performance to shared hosting.

View all their hosting options here.

Who are the founders of GreenGeeks?

Trey Gardner

CEO – Founder

Trey has been in the web hosting business since 1999 and has worked for or have helped to build 8 web hosting companies including; iPowerweb, iPage, StartLogic, Dot5Hosting, Globat, Lunarpages, Hostpapa and finally GreenGeeks. His expertise has been in the sales and marketing of the hosting services.

Kaumil Patel

Chief Operating Officer

Originally starting out as a web developer and running several successful web projects, Kaumil decided to get involved in the web hosting industry in 2001 at the young age of 16. He brings extensive experience in day-to-day hosting operations. He also brings mergers & acquisitions experience.

How to use GreenGeeks?

GreenGeeks use cPanel to manage your website which is a common tool used by most website hosting companies. It allows you to manage email accounts, website storage and see some basic analytics of who has visited your website. My advice would be not to rely on those website statistics but rather install a dedicated tool like Google Analytics or my personal choice Clicky (free account here).

Apart from these basic functions it will also have something called Softaculous which allows you with a few simple clicks to have popular CMS's like WordPress, Joomla or Drupal installed in a matter of minutes. There are numerous other apps available including a full blown eCommerce system called Magento, which a lot of larger businesses use because of it's scalability and enterprise level features.

All of this is waiting for you in your cPanel and if you run into any issues the friendly support team at GreenGeeks are always a call away. They also have live chat which is what I normally use as it gets any problems you run into sorted out much quicker.

Next I would like to compare GreenGeeks base plan to another popular provider called Bluehost.

GreenGeeks vs Bluehost

$ 2
Per Month

  • Unlimited websites
  • Unlimited storage
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Free domain name
  • CDN included (Cloudflare)

$ 3
Per Month

  • 1 website
  • 50GB storage
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Free SSL certificate
  • Free domain name

A few thoughts on the above

GreenGeeks runs absolute circles around Bluehost in terms of features and storage space and bandwidth. Combine this with the fact you can expect far better support from GreenGeeks it's an easy decision that my recommendation is to go with GreenGeeks.

The only caveat is notice the normal price of GreenGeeks is higher than Bluehost and that is the rate you will pay after your first invoice when your promotional period ends. Typically, the best deal is three years worth of hosting so that means in three years you might get a nasty surprise at how much more your hosting costs. I know this happens, so it's good to know of the “normal” price and budget accordingly.

Another pro tip because the hosting industry is so competitive is open a live chat and talk to an agent about any available renewal coupon codes, they will more than likely give you a better deal.

GreenGeeks Pros

  • Environmentally friendly
  • 99.9% up-time guarantee
  • 24/7 Live chat
  • Free domain name when purchasing
  • Offer phone based support too
  • Content Delivery Network to improve speed of your website
  • Account isolation on shared servers when a website is hacked
  • Free migration service

GreenGeeks Cons

  • Not WordPress focused (versus others who just offer WP hosting)
  • Your renewal fee will be much larger than initial price paid

A response from GreenGeeks regarding
their WordPress Hosting

I received a response from GreenGeeks about my wording above stating that they are not WordPress focused. I in no way mean that you are getting a subpar product because at the end of the day you do get what you pay for and WPX is more than double the price. But I thought I would include this response from GreenGeeks regarding their involvement in the WordPress community.

In terms of WordPress and WordPress support, we are as active if not more so than some other web hosts out there. GreenGeeks is sponsoring the WordPress community on a global level. Allowing communities access to more funding to help their WordCamp events grow. On top of a global sponsorship we will be involving ourselves in the WordPress community in person even more moving forward. Volunteering at local WordCamps and providing additional assistance as needed will give these camps a little boost in what they're already accomplishing and we're quite proud to be a part of it all.
In 2019 - we will be sponsoring WordCamps in North Central and South America. You can learn more about us being global sponsors at

Are there Up-sells?

GreenGeeks is not nearly as intrusive as some other website hosting companies for up-sells.

You click get started and all they ask you about is your domain name whether you have one already or want a new one. This is not an up-sell because as part of their hosting accounts they give you a free domain name, anyway.

GreenGeeks Alternatives?

There really is no shortage of alternatives with website hosting, it is fiercely competitive and the big companies are always offering different deals and incentives to get people to sign up to one of their long-term plans.

The closest alternatives to GreenGeeks are Bluehost and Siteground. My personal recommendation would be Siteground over Bluehost though as your website grows.

If you don't mind paying more and you run your websites on WordPress I 100% recommend WPX Hosting starting at $24.99 per month. It's well worth it for the speed you and your clients get when browsing the site.

If you don't run WordPress and just want fast servers no matter budget consider something like Cloudways.

Word of warning:

Be careful with website hosting promotions and clarify what happens after your first invoice.

For example, you might secure your first 3 years for $120 and then when that time period finishes your next invoice could be closer to $500 for the same time period. Just beware because all the companies that offer cheap hosting like GreenGeeks does this, so you need to budget with that in mind or contact their live chat agents before renewing to give you a deal.

Do I recommend GreenGeeks?

For me personally I use WordPress and I care a lot about website speed so I use the best hosting for WordPress – WPX Hosting. I pay a premium for this at $24.99 per month vs. $2.95 per month for GreenGeeks.

For me it's worth it, for you especially if you are starting out and you want to help the planet yes I would recommend GreenGeeks. A big reason for me which is more important personally than the “Green Stuff” is that GreenGeeks are independently owned.

I cannot tell you the amount of horror stories of people who have hosted their websites with some larger “conglomerate hosts”. Support times are often a nightmare and they can leave you in the lurch if they feel your website is putting too much of a strain on the server. However you will not have that issue with GreenGeeks with their US based support staff ready to help 24/7/365.

So concluding, yes I recommend GreenGeeks.

If you are on a higher budget though and use WordPress I really can't recommend GreenGeeks over WPX Hosting.

GreenGeeks Coupon or Discount?

One thing about the website hosting game is that it's very competitive and there are always GreenGeeks coupon codes.

Right now as I look at the website I can see there is a 3 year deal for unlimited sites for $2.95 per month instead of $9.95. However the time to really keep an eye on deals is seasonal holidays like 4th of July and Black Friday/Cyber Monday as this is when these companies go all out to give you the best deal and GreenGeeks is no different as they just recently did a Black Friday deal as I write this beginning of the year.

I will display any other GreenGeeks coupon codes found below (if any)
